Tips

Packing

Lofoten's weather can change dramatically throughout the day, so it's wise to pack as if you're going on a mountain excursion. Always check the weather forecast before venturing out, and be sure to bring rain and windproof clothing.
When packing, be sure to include the following essentials:

  • Rain and Windproof Attire: These are absolutely essential to stay dry and comfortable.

  • Wool Base Layers: An inner layer of wool is a must to keep warm in unpredictable weather.

  • Lightweight Down Jacket: This versatile piece of clothing is a necessity to combat chilly temperatures.

  • Gloves and Hat: Don't forget these, especially if you're planning to go fishing or take boat or ferry trips.

  • Hiking Boots: They are a must, as jogging shoes might not withstand the wet conditions.

  • Trainers: For those leisurely, drier walks.

  • Water Bottles: Keep hydrated during your hikes with a water bottle.

  • Small Backpack: Perfect for carrying your clothing and water during your hikes.

Sea temperatures are typically around 6-7 degrees Celsius, so be prepared for a bracing swim!

The house is ideally situated right on the beach and within walking distance to shops. The nearest grocery store, "Bunnpris," is in the center of Ramberg and has essential items, though for fresh produce, vegetables, wine, and spirits, you'll need to drive to Leknes, which is a 30-minute drive north on E10. (Note that only beer is sold in grocery stores in Norway.) Basics like oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, tea, and coffee will be available for your arrival. If you have any questions about food, shopping, or activities, we're here to assist you.

The Lofoten region enjoys nearly endless daylight from May to August, with no real darkness. While it's fantastic, it can also make it challenging to sleep. Fortunately, the house is equipped with dark blinds for all windows. Still, if you're sensitive to light, you may want to bring a sleeping mask.

Henningsvær and Svolvær are both popular small villages in Lofoten, offering vibrant cultural scenes, concerts, and bustling nightlife for all ages. We may not be experts on these areas, but they're definitely worth a visit. Both are about a 2-hour drive from Ramberg.

Ramberg, in the southern part of Lofoten, offers a more tranquil countryside experience, with significant distances between each village. We've listed some things of interest to you. There are many exciting hikes in the southern part of Lofoten, and you'll find a guidebook in the house to help you plan your adventures.

Day trips and hiking

  • Consider taking a day trip to the islands of Værøy or Røst with the car ferry from Moskenes. The car ferry departs from Moskenes ferry port (25 km south of you). For Værøy, it leaves at approximately 09:30 in the morning and returns to Moskenes at around 00:00. The car ferry trip is, believe it or not, free of charge out here. Check the timetables here and here.

  • A favorite day trip is to Bunæs Beach, with a car park in Reine center. The ferry service is close to the car park, taking only about 10-15 minutes to reach Vinstad. Bring lunch and spend the day at Bunæs. Be aware that the ferry doesn't run frequently, so don't be late, as it can fill up both ways! Learn more here.

  • Reinebringen is one of the most popular peaks in Lofoten, known for its 1,600 sherpa steps leading to the top. It can get crowded in the summer, so consider an early morning or late night hike for a more pleasant experience. The hike takes about 2.5 hours for a return trip (5.5 km). There are small benches along the way to rest and enjoy the view.

  • The hike to Ryten/Kvalvika is one of the most popular in Lofoten. You can even see the soft peak
